Performance Programs for Dairy Goats

Performance programs are optional tools we use to track how our goats are doing over time. They give us real numbers and standardized records we can use for breeding decisions, herd improvement, and documentation.

Pencil Marks on the Doorframe

You know how you mark a kid’s height on the doorframe? You know they are growing, but the pencil mark tells you exactly how much and when. Milk testing and appraisal are just pencil marks on the doorframe. They turn “I think she’s a good milker” into “I know she milked 1,200 lbs.”

None of these programs are required to raise healthy goats. They are not just for big herds or show people either. A small herd can get a lot of value from even one program because it stops the guessing.

If we only do one thing, we do milk testing. It tells us what our dairy goats are actually producing, not what we hope they are producing. If we want a second program, linear appraisal is the logical add because it gives us a structured, consistent way to track conformation over time.

Shows and DNA testing can be great tools too, but they are more goal-dependent. We keep them here so you can pick what matches the herd and the budget.

Who This Section Is For

  • Breeders: milk tests, stars, appraisal, and DNA help make better keep/sell and pairing decisions.
  • Homestead milkers: testing and records can catch problems early and help with feeding decisions.
  • People who just want healthy pet goats: most of this can be skipped unless you like data.

Milk Testing & Production Stars

Milk testing programs measure milk volume and components like butterfat and protein over time. This data helps track consistency across a lactation and can be used to earn production stars through organizations such as ADGA, MDGA, and TMGR.

Linear Appraisal

Linear appraisal is a standardized evaluation of a goat's physical structure performed by a trained appraiser. It helps identify strengths and weaknesses related to soundness, longevity, and breeding goals, and represents a snapshot in time rather than a final judgment.

Goat Shows

Goat shows provide judge evaluation and feedback on how goats meet breed standards. Both in-person and virtual shows offer educational value, community involvement, and learning opportunities, even for herds that never plan to breed or sell.

DNA Testing

DNA testing is used to confirm parentage and identify specific genetic traits. It is now required for registration of bucks in some registries, while remaining optional or situational for does.
